July 2, 2026 Mars Petcare US of Franklin, Tennessee is recalling two lots of Pedigree Can High Protein Chopped Chicken & Duck Flavor 13.2oz wet dog food that may contain sharp metal and plastic. The cans already failed the company's own quality checks, which is why they were sent to a third-party vendor to be destroyed. Somewhere along the way the product was diverted, sold, and put on shelves across the country. For anyone who follows pet food recalls, this one breaks the usual pattern.

The recall started inside Mars, not on a store shelf. Every batch of Pedigree runs through the company's quality control, and these two lots failed it. Mars sent them to an outside vendor for destruction, treating the cans as waste that should never reach a dog's bowl. Someone diverted the shipment and sold the product into U.S. stores anyway. The food was condemned by its own maker and still ended up in front of dogs.

Sharp objects in food are not a stomachache — they are an emergency. The recalled cans may hold hard, sharp pieces of metal and plastic. A dog that swallows them can choke, tear its mouth or throat, or develop a blockage in the gut. Mars reports no illness or injury so far, and that number can move as more cans get opened.

Only two lot codes are affected, and both are printed on the bottom of the can. Look for 613C3KKCFC and 613C1KKCFC on the 13.2oz Pedigree Can High Protein Chopped Chicken & Duck Flavor. No other Pedigree or Mars Petcare product is part of this recall. If your can matches either code, take it out of the rotation now.

Do not feed the recalled food to your dog, even if the can looks normal.
