Parasite season is starting somewhere on the planet right now, no matter where you're reading this. Fleas and ticks are surging as North America and Europe head into fall. Mosquitoes carrying heartworm are ramping up as Australia and South America warm into their own hotter months. The season changes. The question every dog owner should be asking doesn't: is my dog's immune system actually ready for this fight?
Two Hemispheres, One Threat
In the Northern Hemisphere, late summer into fall is when flea and tick populations peak before the first frost — and in warmer regions, they never fully die back. In the Southern Hemisphere, spring and early summer bring rising temperatures that wake up mosquito populations and drive heartworm transmission risk higher by the week. A Rio de Janeiro study found meaningful heartworm seroprevalence tied to seasonal and environmental risk factors, even in dogs receiving regular veterinary care.
Different parasites, different calendars, same underlying question. Preventive medication matters — nobody should skip it. But medication is only half the defense. The other half is whether a dog's own immune system can respond well when exposure happens anyway.
What Diet Has to Do With Fighting Off Parasites
Immune function isn't fixed. It responds to what a dog eats, meal after meal, for months before parasite season ever arrives. The clearest evidence comes from fatty acid research. A landmark study on aged and young dogs found that the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids in the diet directly shaped immune function, eicosanoid production, and oxidative stress — the same inflammatory pathways the body relies on to mount an effective response to parasites and pathogens.
A follow-up study confirmed the same pattern: the dietary omega-6 to omega-3 ratio influenced immune system function and antioxidant status in aged dogs specifically, the population least able to compensate for a poor baseline diet. Fish oil backs this up from the other direction — one trial supplementing clinically normal dogs with fish oil measurably changed the production of inflammatory mediators in the body.
Kibble sits on the wrong side of that ratio by default. Most dry formulas lean heavily on cheap, shelf-stable omega-6-rich seed oils and grain fillers. Real omega-3 sources cost more and break down under the high heat of extrusion, so they rarely make the cut. A dog eating that way year-round isn't entering parasite season with a neutral immune system. It's entering with one already skewed toward inflammation instead of resilience — one more entry on the long list of processed food effects that never make it onto a bag.
Weight Makes It Worse
Body condition compounds the problem. One study comparing obese and lean dogs found measurable differences in fecal microbiota, inflammatory markers, and antioxidant status between the two groups — obese dogs carrying a heavier baseline inflammatory load before any outside stressor hits. Kibble's high-carbohydrate formulation is a direct driver of that extra weight, which means the same diet is loading the dice twice: once through fatty acid imbalance, once through excess weight.
Building Real Resilience Before Exposure Happens
Keep the medication. Heartworm, flea, and tick prevention prescribed by a vet is the first line of defense, and no diet change replaces it.
Rebalance the fatty acid ratio. Adding real omega-3 sources — fish, fish oil, or a fresher, less-processed diet — gives the immune system the raw material it needs before exposure, not after.
Keep body condition lean going into the season. A dog at a healthy weight starts the fight against fleas, ticks, or heartworm with less background inflammation working against it.
Check regional risk specifically. Northern Hemisphere owners should watch flea and tick activity through the first hard frost. Southern Hemisphere owners should watch mosquito activity climb as temperatures rise into their own summer.
The Realization
Parasite prevention gets treated as a single product — a chewable, a collar, a monthly dose. But the product only has to work against a parasite. The immune system behind it has to work against everything, all year, on whatever's been going into the bowl. That's the part no label mentions and no season skips.
