A white dog on TikTok greeted his owner like she'd been lost at sea, and she'd only gone to dinner.

The clip from @meezyd was TAG24's viral video of the day for Oct. 26, captioned "How my dog greets me after being gone forever (went to dinner)." She calls him a dancing Q-tip. Viewers said he looks "wet and dry at the same time" and like shredded chicken.

That kind of welcome is one of the things dogs save for their favorite humans, and research shows it grows with the time you're gone.

What the researchers timed

In a Swedish study, Therese Rehn and Linda Keeling filmed 12 pet dogs left home alone for 30 minutes, 2 hours and 4 hours.

  • None of the dogs had a history of separation problems.

  • Home alone, the dogs spent most of the time resting, and their behavior didn't change as the hours passed.

  • The difference showed up at the door. After 2 or 4 hours, the dogs wagged more, moved more, paid closer attention and interacted more with their owners than after 30 minutes.

  • Lip licking and body shaking at the reunion also went up after the longer absences.

  • Heart rates tended to climb higher in the first minutes after the owner came home.

The bigger greeting showed up by the 2-hour mark, which is about the length of a dinner out.

Does your dog know how long you were gone

The researchers couldn't tell whether dogs track the passing time or only notice it once you walk back in.

Your dog keeps you in mind while you're away. In a brain-scan study, the reward center of dogs' brains lit up most for the scent of a familiar person, even with that person nowhere in the room. Your dog's nose finds your scent on your side of the bed.

So the dancing Q-tip had a real reason to dance, since two hours is long enough for a dog to notice.

When a big greeting is normal and when it isn't

A wiggly greeting that settles down within a few minutes comes from a dog who's glad you're home.

Signs of separation stress show up while you're gone, according to the ASPCA separation guide:

  • Barking or howling that keeps going after you leave

  • Chewing or digging at doors and windows, or trying to escape

  • Peeing or pooping in the house when your dog is otherwise house-trained

  • Pacing or getting worked up as you get ready to leave

  • Trying to stop you from walking out the door

If you see those signs, record a departure for your vet. Dogs who shadow you at home can struggle more when you leave, and our guide to the clingy dog walks through why.

How to make dinner nights easier

A few small habits can make the hours alone feel shorter.

  • Take your dog on a walk or a sniffy outing before you go. A tired dog rests more easily.

  • Leave a stuffed toy or lick mat filled with raw or rehydrated freeze-dried raw, frozen so it lasts. It gives your dog a job for the first stretch alone.

  • Keep departures low-key. Grab your keys, walk out and leave out the long goodbye.

  • Let the greeting happen when you get back, then settle into your normal routine.

  • Set up a pet camera if you want to see what your dog does while you're out.

Dinner will still feel like forever to your dog, and you'll get the dancing Q-tip welcome either way.
